The Pittsburgh Penguins will keep Jesse Puljujarvi around an sign him to a professional tryout in the AHL.
After joining the team as a free agent tryout, it looks like Jesse Puljujarvi is set to execute his next steps earning a full contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
According to Penguins president and general manager Kyle Dubas on the GM Show, Puljujarvi is heading to the AHL to finally get some game action in.
Dubas stated that Puljujarvi will join the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on an AHL professional tryout contract and can play up to 25 games at that level.
While he is playing with WBS, the Penguins will be looking to see exactly what Puljujarvi can bring to the table as head coach Mike Sullivan is still learning what kind of player he is.
Sullivan noted after the most recent practice that Puljujarvi has been getting more involved and that new plans moving forward were likely coming.
This update from Dubas seems to be the confirmation that Puljujarvi will continue to stick around in the Penguins organization and still have a chance to earn not only a contract with the team but a role in the NHL lineup.
Dubas alluded to his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, specifically during the shortened 2020-21 season where he played against Puljujarvi 10 times and got a great look of him as a player.
“In that year I felt he forechecked incredibly well,” Dubas said. “It was really hard to break out of the zone because of his physicality and his reach and his reads on the forecheck.”
Puljujarvi played with the Edmonton Oilers at that time and seems to have all the tools the Penguins are looking for from a depth winger.
He can provide great defense with a nice touch of scoring to help bolster some offense, and as Sullivan likes to always say, being hard to play against.
No official word has been made about Puljujarvi's PTO, but that is the expectation.
UPDATE: Puljujarvi has officailly signed his PTO with WBS.
