
Investigators have determined the death of a former Pittsburgh Penguins forward was ruled a suicide.
PITTSBURGH – An investigation has opened into the death of former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Konstantin Koltsov, who died in Miami at the age of 42. According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, Koltsov’s death is being ruled a suicide.
In a statement from the police department, they were called to an incident involving a male jumping from a balcony of the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort. Authorities did not suspect any foul play involved. Police say the incident occurred around 12:39 p.m. on Monday.
Miami-Dade Police Department’s Homicide Bureau has taken over the investigation.
Initial reports from Telegraf, a Belarusian media outlet, Koltsov’s passing was due to a “detached blood clot.”
Koltsov was drafted in the first round by the Penguins in 1999 before playing three years with the team. From 2002 to 2006, Kolstov played 144 games and scored 38 total points. The Penguins released a statement extending their condolences to Koltsov’s family and friends.
In his last year with the Penguins, Koltsov played with both Sidney Crosby and Mario Lemieux.
Koltsov was in Miami with his girlfriend Aryna Sabalenka who is the No. 2 ranked women's tennis player in the world. The two were in Miami for the 2024 Miami Open. She is scheduled to begin the tournament on Friday.
