The Pittsburgh Penguins will likely stick with their bench boss for another season.

PITTSBURGH – For the second consecutive season, the Pittsburgh Penguins will not fight in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Many people are quick to point fingers and a lot of blame is being placed on the Penguins coaching staff.

The Penguins haven’t won a playoff round since 2018 and Mike Sullivan has been taking much of the heat ever since. With people calling for Sullivan’s job, president and general manager Kyle Dubas continues to put his faith in the two-time Stanley Cup winning bench boss.

“Everyone that is in place is in place because I’ve either brought them here, or have elected to keep them here,” Dubas said. “When things don’t turn out and things fall below expectations… I take responsibility.”

Dubas says he will evaluate everything from medical staff, to player personnel, to coaching. From the sounds of it, Sullivan will be part of those evaluations.

“Sully and I will meet continually about staff,” Dubas said. “Go through each staff member. Evaluate whether they are the right fit for our group or not. Then evaluate if we want to make any changes.”

Dubas is doing his job as president and general manager by evaluating each member of the organization, but keeping Sullivan by his side in evaluations suggests he’s sticking around.

“It’s up to me and Sully and our whole management group to work to get us back to where everyone in Pittsburgh wants us to get to.”

Associate coach Todd Reirden and assistant coach Mike Vellucci are on expiring contracts making changes behind the bench likely. Just don’t expect change from the head coaching position.
