The Pittsburgh Penguins may have multiple players undergo surgeries to start the offseason.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins had a relatively healthy season in 2023-24, with six players appearing in all 82 games. While there was excellent health, the season ended with multiple players dealing with some long-lasting injuries.
During his final interview of the season, Penguins veteran defenseman Kris Letang noted he was dealing with a few injuries throughout the season. Letang was one of the six who played all season and indicated that surgery may be on the table, but nothing is certain yet.
Penguins president and general manager spoke with media and provided updates on multiple names who ended the year dealing with ailments. According to Dubas, Letang is seeking a second opinion on what he is battling.
“Kris was going to get a second opinion on all that ails him,” Dubas said. “Which is significant. He’s played with it the whole year. It’s likely going to head that way.”
Dubas noted that there will be updates regarding Letang and his health when they become available.
Following Letang, Dubas provided updates on forward Matt Nieto and defenseman John Ludvig.
Nieto appeared in only 22 games with the Penguins before suffering a lower-body injury in late November. He underwent successful surgery in January but never returned to the lineup.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever felt as bad for somebody throughout the year,” Dubas said. “Every time he would put the work in, he would have a setback.”
With multiple setbacks under his belt, Dubas stated that Nieto is going to seek one last opinion to determine his future.
“He’s going to go next week for another and final opinion on what the future is,” Dubas said. “In terms of whether he’s going to rehab or have another operation.”
Dubas stated that there will also be later updates regarding Ludvig and his status. Dubas did not rule out an operation for him, either.
Expect the Penguins to provide further updates on the status or possible surgeries of Letang, Nieto, and Ludvig.
