The Pittsburgh Penguins had their losing streak extend to three games after brutal loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins looked to finish off their West Coast road trip on a high note, not just to get back to the win column but to keep their playoff hopes alive. Losers of two straight, the Penguins had a tough test ahead of them in the Edmonton Oilers.

It was the second half of a back-to-back for both teams, but the only lineup change for the Penguins was between the pipes. Alex Nedeljkovic stepped in for Tristan Jarry.

    First Period

The Penguins weathered early storms as much as possible and managed to keep up with the Oilers. Despite holding their ground, the Oilers struck first.

A two-on-one chance with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman broke out, and Nedeljkovic made the initial save. McDavid ripped the shot, but Hyman found the rebound and forced it past Nedeljkovic to take the lead.

Luckily for the Penguins, that was the only offense the Oilers could muster through the first 20 minutes, giving them just a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.

    Second Period

Early in the second frame, the Penguins had a great chance to tie the game at one, but Oilers’ goalie Calvin Pickard made a sprawling save on Sidney Crosby. The Oilers then quickly turned defense into offense.

The Oilers picked up another odd-man rush, which Corey Perry capitalized on.

A two-goal lead wasn’t enough for the Oilers as Hyman took advantage of a loose puck and wide-open net for his second goal of the game and 42nd of the season.

Jansen Harkins has played in 42 games this season and has yet to score a goal. He got a great opportunity with a penalty shot chance. Despite having Pickard beat, Harkins missed the net and remained off the score sheet.

The Penguins continued to sit with no goals as the Oilers continued their offensive onslaught. Ryan McLeod and former Penguins defenseman Cody Ceci found the back of the net before the end of the period.

With two periods in the books, the Penguins were down 5-0, and all hope seemed lost.

    Third Period

The third period kicked off with the Penguins down 5-0 and almost immediately took a pair of penalties. The Oilers were given over a minute to work with a two-man advantage.

The Oilers posses one of the best power plays in the NHL, but the Penguins managed to kill off the opportunity.

Special teams didn't matter, though as Connor McDavid was left wide open with a huge rebound opportunity to put the Oilers up 6-0.

The game was just about over, but the Penguins made sure to at least breakup the shutout bid. Evgeni Malkin broke his scoreless streak notching his first tally in 13 games.

That would be all she wrote between the Penguins and Oilers, as the Penguins losing streak extends to three games. The Penguins' kicked off this four-game road trip with an impressive win over the Vancouver Canucks, but it's been all downhill since.
