Penguins Get Major Boost Against Flyers

The Pittsburgh Penguins are set for a must-win contest against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Pittsburgh Penguins power play has crashed their season and may cost them a playoff spot.

PITTSBURGH – If the Pittsburgh Penguins are still serious about finding a spot in the postseason, their contest against the Philadelphia Flyers will be a must-win not just for the two standings points but also considering the number of advantages they have in heading into the afternoon contest.

The Penguins hit the ice at PPG Paints Arena after a day off, while the Flyers played a physical contest against the New York Rangers. Thanks to them being in the second half of a back-to-back, the Flyers are starting Cal Peterson in net.

Peterson has only played in four games to this point of the season with a 2-1-0 record, a .890 save percentage, and 3.00 goals-against average. The Penguins might not have outstanding goal numbers this year, but they’ll need to take full advantage of a tired team and inconsistent goalie.

The Flyers will also play their second straight game without leading scorer Travis Konecny. In 57 games played, Konecny has picked up 27 goals and 27 assists for 54 total points.

Everything is leaning in the Penguins’ favor, and it’ll be up to them to take full advantage. If the Penguins can find a victory, they will pull to six points behind the Flyers with four games in hand.

A loss wouldn't quite mean the end of the year for the Penguins, but it would be extremely close. This is as close to a "must-win" that the Penguins will get.
