A Pittsburgh Penguins forward has accepted his invite and will represent Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship.

PITTSBURGH—The Pittsburgh Penguins' early offseason gives several players ample opportunity to represent their country at the IIHF World Championship. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was long expected to play in the tournament but will not represent Team Canada.

With the release of their full roster, Crosby was not listed, but Penguins forward Michael Bunting was.

Bunting is new to the Penguins organization, coming over from the Carolina Hurricanes in the Jake Guentzel trade. In 21 games played with the Penguins, Bunting scored six goals and 13 assists for 19 total points.

This will be Bunting’s second time representing Canada at the IIHF World Championship. His first appearance came in 2021 when he appeared in 10 games. Team Canada won gold in the 2021 tournament.

Crosby was invited by Team Canada and it was initially rumored that he would join. During his final media availability of the 2023-24 season, Crosby said he would consider his invitation, but ultimately turned it down.

Penguins defensemen Marcus Pettersson and Erik Karlsson have also committed to representing Team Sweden.

Former Penguins Jared McCann, Brandon Tanev, and Jamie Oleksiak will also represent Team Canada at the upcoming tournament.
