The Pittsburgh Penguins joined in the mourning of legendary broadcaster Bob Cole.
PITTSBURGH – Like the rest of the hockey world, the Pittsburgh Penguins are mourning the loss of one of the most recognizable voices in the sport. Legendary broadcaster Bob Cole passed away at the age of 90, and replays of his famous calls began to spread across social media.
The Penguins joined in by tweeting and honoring Cole’s memory with one of the most iconic moments in the franchise’s history.
In Game 2 of the 1991 Stanley Cup Final, Mario Lemieux picked up the puck in his own zone and wouldn’t be stopped. Lemieux went coast to coast, splitting multiple Minnesota North Stars players before turning the netminder Jon Casey inside out.
In the clip tweeted by the Penguins, Cole can be heard calling the play in awe.
“Look at Lemieux! Oh my goodness!” Cole calls before Lemieux finishes his iconic goal. “What a goal! What a move! Lemieux! Oh, baby!”
The Penguins went on to win that series in six games for the franchise’s first Stanley Cup championship.
The Penguins said Cole’s voice was the “soundtrack to some of hockey’s most memorable moments.” This single goal from Lemieux stands out as an all-time moment in Penguins, and hockey history. It’s made even more iconic thanks to Cole’s call.
