The Pittsburgh Penguins will continue to roll with Kyle Dubas as their president and general manager.
PITTSBURGH – Not long after Kyle Dubas was hired as the Pittsburgh Penguins president of hockey operations, he appointed himself as general manager for the sake of continuity. By naming himself GM, Dubas kicked the idea of looking for an outside hire down the road.
After his first season in the dual role, Dubas and the Penguins missed out on the playoffs. With no postseason and Dubas’ fingerprints all over the team, could he begin the search for a fresh face in the front office?
Not quite. When asked about the idea of searching for a general manager this summer, Dubas was quick to say he would continue working with both titles.
“I’ll roll along,” Dubas said. “I don’t think right now, with where we’re at, bringing in frankly somebody that’s going to be deferring to me anyway, is at all what we need in our building.”
Dubas spoke highly of multiple names in the Penguins front office that he has hired and promoted. Senior advisor Doug Wilson, assistant GM Jason Spezza, director of hockey operations and legal affairs Vukie Mpofu, and special assistant to president and GM Amanda Kessel were all stated by name by Dubas.
“Unless somebody moves on for a promotion elsewhere,” Dubas said. “I’ll evaluate it, but my instinct right now is that group has so much potential to grow.”
Dubas said that any number of those in the Penguins front office could be general managers one day.
For the time being, it looks like the Penguins will move forward with the same front office outlook. Possibly another year or two down the line a name like Spezza, Mpofu, or Kessel may find themselves as Penguins GM.
