A win against the Los Angeles Kings could put the Pittsburgh Penguins in great position.
The Pittsburgh Penguins entered their three-game road trip in California with a lackluster 3-6-0 record and were in dead last in the Eastern Conference.
No one was happy about where the Penguins stood, but they felt as if they were playing much better than their record suggested.
Analytics backed up that statement, but then too did the first two games of the trip with a pair of important victories.
A 10-2 win over the San Jose Sharks and 2-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks put the Penguins in promising position that they will need to take full advantage of.
If the Penguins can fly into Los Angeles and get a win over the Kings, they will not only seal a perfect road trip, but they’ll push up a few spots in the rankings.
Within two points in the Metropolitan Division sit the 5-7-1 Philadelphia Flyers, 4-5-3 Columbus Blue Jackets, and 5-4-0- Washington Capitals.
A win over the Kings will give the Penguins a 6-6-0 record pushing them past those teams in into sole possession of fifth in the Metro.
Fifth still isn’t where they want to be and more work would need to be done, but they have to start somewhere and a perfect road trip could be a complete game changer for the season.
The Blue Jackets do also play and could make moving up so many spots difficult, but they have a tough task against a Dallas Stars team looking to get back in the win column.
Coming back home on a three-game heater will make a world of difference for the Penguins, not just in the mindset, but also in the standings.
