The Pittsburgh Penguins aren't letting their playoff hopes die out after their second consecutive win.

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have gone streaking. For the first time since late February, the Penguins have won two games in a row and have tabulated standings points in three consecutive contests. They’ve played pretty poorly since the All-Star break, but the Penguins and their core are doing everything possible to keep them in the playoff hunt.

Reaching the postseason seems nearly impossible for the Penguins, and that’s because it is. Even with wins in back-to-back games, the Penguins hold a 2.9% chance of reaching the postseason, according to moneypuck.com.

Teams have started to clinch spots in the postseason, while others are beginning to officially be mathematically eliminated. The Penguins are much closer to being eliminated, but they’re clinging to hope for a more meaningful game late into April.

The Penguins aren’t alone in the race for playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. Sitting in the back of the running with them are the Buffalo Sabres, who hold a 1.2% chance.

A bit of a gap opens up between the Penguins and the team ahead of them in this odds race. The New York Islanders file in with an 11.3% after being one of the likeliest teams to claim a wild card spot.

Next up are the Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils, who hold 16.5% and 17.3% chances, respectively. The Devils have higher odds but are five points out of the second wild card.

Currently holding down that second wild card spot is the Washington Capitals, which have a 67.7% chance of making the playoffs and are seven points ahead of the Penguins.

For the Penguins to reach the postseason, they’ll need a near-perfect run in their final 10 games and a ton of outside help. The odds aren’t in their favor, but they won’t give up hope until they are officially eliminated from contention.
