Penguins Power Play Nearing Franchise Low

The power play of the Pittsburgh Penguins continues to struggle and is closing in on a franchise low point.

The power play continues to be the achilles heel for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

There have been plenty of new problems sprouting up for the Pittsburgh Penguins over the last few weeks, but one problem continues to fail and is costing crucial points in the standings.

The Penguins haven’t scored a power play goal in 11 consecutive games going 0-29 in that span.

According to Bob Grove, 11 games ties a franchise long stretch of game without a goal on the man advantage.

The last time the Penguins hit 11 games without a power play goal was in 2019 when they went 0-25 in opportunities.

The Penguins have tried multiple different looks this time around, including separating Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, then most recently trying Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson on the same unit.

Nothing has clicked yet, and in their most recent contest against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Flyers penalty killing unit seemed to catch most of the offensive opportunities.

Normally, your goalie shouldn’t be you best power play presence, but Alex Nedeljkovic had to make multiple saves while the Penguins had a man advantage including a couple of breakaways.

For what it’s worth, a Penguins netminder has scored more recently than their power play.

Heading into the year, considering the vast amount of fire power within the lineup, the Penguins were expected to have one of the best power plays in the NHL.

Through 24 games played, the Penguins have scored only seven power play goals in 67 attempts; sitting at 10.5% they are 30th in the NHL.

The Penguins are looking for answers, head coach Mike Sullivan continues to say that everyone takes great pride in the power play and it’s success, but something needs to give and give soon.

Seven of the Penguins’ last eight games have been separated by just a goal, and any sort of success on the power play may have salvaged as many as seven standings points.

The Penguins currently sit outside of a playoff spot, but thankfully the Eastern Conference is still an extremely tight race and they could be right back in the hunt in just a few games.
