The Pittsburgh Penguins avoid arbitration with a new deal for Drew O'Connor.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the re-signing of Drew O’Connor to a new contract ahead of his scheduled arbitration date.

O’Connor’s new contract will keep him with the Penguins for two seasons at $925,000 annually.

During the 2022-23 season, O’Connor played his first year with regular NHL time, appearing in 46 total games and recording 11 points.

O’Connor had initially filed for arbitration and was set to have a hearing on August 4.

The Penguins avoid arbitration by signing a deal ahead of the August 4 deadline.

Even without the use of an arbiter, the Penguins will have a second buyout window opened for 48 hours.

That buyout window opens in three days.

A popular theory going around is that president of hockey operations will utilize the second buyout window to get out from the Mikael Granlund contract.

As for O’Connor, he will likely have a regular spot on the NHL roster once again as a depth forward and stout penalty killer.

At only 25-years-old, O’Connor has a long future in the league ahead of him.
