Penguins Prospect Deserves Fresh Start in NHL

One of the Pittsburgh Penguins' top prospects has returned from injury and appears ready for jump to NHL.

PITTSBURGH – Before the 2023-24 season kicked off, Pittsburgh Penguins president and general manager Kyle Dubas said that he fully expected young forward Sam Poulin to fight for a regular NHL role by the end of the year. Unfortunately for Poulin, things never lined up between him and the Penguins.

Injuries to Poulin have derailed his chances at the NHL so far. When he has been healthy, so too has the NHL roster. If the Penguins needed a jump to their lineup, Poulin was already out.

With the trade deadline under a week away, the timing might finally be right for Poulin to get his well-deserved call to the NHL.

Poulin recently returned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins roster from another injury and was productive right away. In his first game back, Poulin notched three assists in their win over the Charlotte Checkers. Those assists pushed Poulin to 21 (11G-10A) points in 27 games played at the AHL level.

The upcoming trade deadline might see Poulin change teams but not organizations. The Penguins might be heading towards a big sale with their lineup, opening up possible roster spots for AHL players to fill in.

This is where Poulin can be his triumphant return to the NHL and possibly show what he’s made of down the stretch of the season. Poulin picked up an assist in his first three games in the big league.

Poulin has earned the right to play in the NHL again. Unfortunately, injuries have made it challenging, but the timing might finally be lining up.
