The Pittsburgh Penguins will be a featured team in the second ever 'Big City Greens Classic.'
PITTSBURGH – When the Pittsburgh Penguins take the ice against the Boston Bruins, it will be in a way not seen before. The Penguins and Bruins are facing off for the second ever “NHL Big City Greens Classic.”
For the second straight year, the NHL is teaming up with Disney to present a fully animated game of hockey. In a multi-cast of the contest, the Disney stations will feature the live game-play, but completely animated. Some of the sport’s biggest names like Sidney Crosby and Brad Marchand will be turned into animated characters based on the Disney animated series “Big City Greens.”
Outside of an ABC and ESPN+ broadcast, the animated portion will be presented on Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney+.
According to a release from the NHL, the presentation will blend two types of tracking technologies to bring the animated characters to life. NHL EDGE position data and Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking.
ESPN commentators Drew Carter, Kevin Weekes, and Arda Öcal will don virtual reality headsets to immerse themselves into the animated world, as well. The Bruins will be coached by “Big City Greens’” Gramma, while the Penguins will be coached by Cricket.
The Penguins will look to find their way back to the win column after a disheartening loss to the Washington Capitals.
