Sidney Crosby's future with the Pittsburgh Penguins continues to be called into question.
PITTSBURGH – The 2023-24 season continues to get uglier for the Pittsburgh Penguins, as a recent loss to the Ottawa Senators extended their losing streak to four games. With just one win in their last eight games, the Penguins have scored just two goals in their previous four contests.
Reaching the playoffs seems far-fetched, forcing many to wonder what the future may hold for a key figure closing in on two decades as the face of the Penguins. The 2024-25 season will be the final year of Sidney Crosby’s contract, and analysts and insiders continue to speculate if he would be willing to finish his career elsewhere.
TSN’s Craig Button says it will be up to the Penguins’ management to keep Crosby informed about decision-making. If Crosby doesn’t like what he’s hearing, he has every right to find a new team.
“I don’t think Sidney Crosby is in any type of position to know what his future is until he hears very clearly from the manager what the direction he wants to go in,” Button said. “Then, I think Sidney Crosby can take a deep breath and start to consider what his future may look like.”
The Penguins just reshaped their front office before the 2023-24 season, bringing in Kyle Dubas as president and general manager. In his first summer in Pittsburgh, Dubas revamped much of the organization, with new names all over the roster and front office.
With under 20 games remaining, the Penguins are well outside of a playoff spot, and Crosby's future in Pittsburgh has started to be called into question.
“Nobody’s going to question Sidney Crosby’s loyalty,” Button said. “But, in the same breath, I don’t think anybody would question Sidney Crosby’s competitive fire and maybe go somewhere else and try and compete for another Stanley Cup.”
Crosby has noted before that he has no desire to pack it up and leave the Penguins, but he’s a fiercely competitive player who would be completely within his right to want something better. At 36 years old, he’s still producing at a great rate and has all the tools needed to become a champion again.
The Penguins will likely have another summer full of change and possibly the start of a rebuild. If Crosby doesn’t want to stick around through that, he’ll have a big decision to make on his future in Pittsburgh.
All signs point to him staying for the remainder of his career no matter what, but these conversations won’t slow down until a complete decision is made.
