The Pittsburgh Penguins are getting MVP-worthy play from Sidney Crosby and he could single handedly take them to the postseason.
PITTSBURGH - At the age of 36, Sidney Crosby is doing things with the Pittsburgh Penguins many would not have predicted.
Crosby is almost single handedly carrying the Penguins back into the playoff picture with elite-level performances each and every night.
With three points against the top team in the NHL in the Boston Bruins, Crosby added another reason he deserves to be well in the Hart Trophy conversation.
NHL Network analyst Mike Kelly said that Crosby’s dominance goes beyond the goal scoring and play making.
As Crosby showed against the Bruins, he is a huge reason why the Penguins are the best team in the league at face offs, he is a stout defensive player, and can be used when protecting a one-goal lead.
In the closing moments in Boston, the Bruins were applying a ton of pressure with their goalie pulled, yet Crosby was on the ice blocking shots and beating out crucial icings.
Kelly said that everything Crosby does forces him to deserve a hard look for the Hart Trophy.
"When voters for the Hart Trophy fill their ballots out, you get five names. I can't think of five people more deserving right now than Sidney Crosby."
If the Penguins can find their way back into the postseason, however, there is no reason why Crosby shouldn’t be near the top of such voting.
Crosby is on pace for 49 goals, 42 assists, and 91 total points; 49 tallies would be good for the second most of his career and 91 total points would be an outstanding number for a 36-year-old in a ‘young-man’s league.’
Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan called Crosby the heartbeat of the Penguins and spoke highly of the way he does the little things to help the team win.
