Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby took the time to lend his voice and pay tribute to a hockey icon.
PITTSBURGH – The hockey world took a moment to reflect when it learned of the passing of legendary broadcaster Bob Cole, and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby made his own tribute. In a video posted by SportsNet, Crosby spoke a few words on Cole and his iconic career.
Cole was behind the mic for one of the most memorable moments during Crosby’s career. During the opening round of the 2010 Playoffs, Crosby danced Jason Spezza behind the Ottawa Senators net with multiple turns before feeding Kris Letang for a goal.
“Give Crosby a couple of assists on that one,” Cole announced as the goal horn rang out. “Oh, baby.”
Crosby spoke on that play in particular before diving into the rest of his tribute.
“It was just really cool the way he built it up,” Crosby said. “You could tell by the emotion in his voice, the way he was setting it up. Eventually, it was going to go in… What he added to it was pretty cool.”
As photos of Crosby and Cole flashed on the screen, it is evident that over the years, the two became friends and spent time together away from hockey rinks.
“You were the voice of hockey,” Crosby said. “And like so many, my family crowded around the TV to listen to your calls. When I think of hockey’s greatest moments, it’s you narrating them.”
Crosby acknowledged the two's friendship and expressed gratitude for their interactions over the years. Cole was one of hockey's most well-known voices, and Crosby was lucky enough to get close enough to the icon.
“Thank you for sharing your gift to the world. Your legacy will live on forever, my friend.”
