The Pittsburgh Penguins were forced to make one unnecessary save in their loss to the Boston Bruins.
PITTSBURGH – At various points during the 2023-24 NHL season, there have been conversations and feuds over “the code” of hockey, and the Pittsburgh Penguins were nearly at the center of the discussion. The Penguins recently suffered a tough 6-4 loss to the Boston Bruins, but tensions flared one last time in the final second of the ga.me.
With the final seconds ticking off the clock, Bruins forward David Pastrnak took a heavy slapshot on Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry. While Jarry made the save, Pastrnak got an earful from Sidney Crosby.
As teams spilled onto the ice, Crosby confronted Pastrnak. Between the benches, ESPN analyst Ray Ferraro said Pastrnak’s case was that he wasn’t trying to score. Crosby questioned Pastrnak’s actions, but the two separated before things got too heated.
Following the game, Crosby tried to play down the confrontation, but he clearly expressed frustration towards his opponent.
“He took a slapshot,” Crosby said. “I didn’t really see where it hit Jars. He can do whatever he wants. Obviously, there’s still time on the clock. There wasn’t much to it.”
Some of the recent interactions regarding players and last-second plays have been about how to properly score on empty nets. While Jarry was playing his position at the time of Pastrnak’s slapper, is he breaking the unwritten rules?
Pastrnak didn’t score a goal but had two assists in the Bruins' win over the Penguins. Considering the Penguins' current position, Crosby’s frustration may have boiled over at that moment.
