Multiple huge games will take place or begin before the Pittsburgh Penguins drop the puck against the Boston Bruins.
PITTSBURGH – First and foremost, the Pittsburgh Penguins are worried about the game in front of them against the Boston Bruins, but there may be some peeking around the league. The Penguins hold the second wild card spot, but only by a point, with a three-way tie right behind them.
Each team involved in that tie (Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings) will take the ice and likely finish their games before the Penguins drop the puck against the Bruins tonight.
Just ahead of the Penguins sit the New York Islanders in third place in the Metropolitan Division. The Islanders look to put a big cushion between them and the Penguins when they take on the New York Rangers at 12:30 p.m.
In the early evening slot, the Flyers host the New Jersey Devils at 5:00 p.m. The Flyers have looked like one of the NHL’s worst teams in the last few weeks but can keep their playoff hopes alive with a win over the Devils.
Moments after the Flyers drop the puck, the Capitals will kick off against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Capitals have also struggled recently but hope to pull out some magic against the Lightning.
The Red Wings will have their hands full as they look to rebound from an overtime loss to the Penguins when they travel to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7:00 p.m.
It’s a busy day for important hockey across the league, and while the Penguins may try to ignore the scores, they might not be able to help themselves.
“I wouldn’t be honest with you if I say we’re not watching the standings,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “I just think it’s human nature.”
While Sullivan and the Penguins may peek at what other teams are up to, they have their minds set on the Bruins and controlling their own destiny.
“Our focus is on the one game in front of us,” Sullivan said. “At the end of the day, we need to take care of business with our team and the games that we play.”
If the Penguins can win over the Bruins and each team mentioned in the three-way tie takes a loss, they will need just one point in their final two games to complete their miraculous run to the postseason.
