PITTSBURGH – With the bye week and All-Star break right around the corner, the Pittsburgh Penguins can’t be happy with the position they currently sit. Seventh out of eight teams in the Metropolitan Division and multiple points separating them from a wild card spot, the Penguins have a tough hill to climb.

Things look bleak, but it isn’t time to throw in the towel just yet, and as pointed out by 93.7 the Fan’s Andrew Fillipponi, the Penguins have been in this position on multiple occasions and came out on top.

After 44 games of the 2023-24 season, the Penguins are 21-17-6 with 48 points. In 2009, they were 21-19-4 for 46 points and went on to win the Stanley Cup. In 2016 they were 21-16-7 with 49 points and again went on to win the Cup.

Not all hope is lost, and this organization has proven to turn the ship around on multiple occasions. It won’t be an easy task, but it is something the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang have done before.

The Penguins finished off the 2008-09 season with a much improved 24-9-5 stretch and entered the postseason second in the Atlantic Division. Down the stretch of the 2015-16 Cup season, the Penguins went on a 27-10-1 run and entered the playoffs second in the Metro.

In both of those previous seasons, the Penguins made a coaching change and that doesn’t seem likely this time around, but there should still be a positive mindset within the room that they right the ship. There is still time to regroup and build for what could be one last kick at the can with the Penguins core.
