After a tough loss, the Pittsburgh Penguins still have an open path to the playoffs.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins are down to their final two games of the 2023-24 season. It wasn’t that long ago that the Penguins seemed dead in the water with no chance of making the playoffs, but a 10-game point streak helped resurrect their season.
On more than one occasion over the last week, the Penguins held the Eastern Conference’s second wild card spot. A spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is so close for the Penguins, yet still so far away.
With two games remaining, the Penguins have the lowest odds of any team still in the running to make the postseason. Winning those last two games will be a huge boost, but it will not guarantee the Penguins make the playoffs.
The Penguins must defeat the Nashville Predators and New York Islanders, but they will also need outside help.
If the Penguins can manage to win out, they will need the Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings to lose one of their final two games.
If the Capitals and Red Wings win both of their last games, the Penguins will need the New York Islanders to lose. Again, the Penguins will need to win their final two games, the final of which comes against the Islanders.
The Philadelphia Flyers are still in the running, but they only have one game left on the calendar. If the Flyers win their last game, the Penguins would again need to win out to leapfrog them.
They’ll need all hands on deck and some outside help, but the Penguins still have a path to return to the postseason.
