History is on the line for Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.

History is on the line for Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.

This season's Pittsburgh Penguins have wandered into unfamiliar territory in many ways. Their power play is the worst in nearly a quarter century. They were sellers at the NHL trade deadline, and their stars haven't shined as bright with the season on the line.

One of those stars, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, is in the midst of a season-worst ten-game goalless drought. He has collected just five assists through that stretch, and the Penguins have a 3-6-1 record.

His scoring struggles have cast doubt on a piece of history that was seemingly a forgone conclusion through most of this season.

Crosby has registered 18 point per game seasons to start his career. That is second-most all-time behind Wayne Gretzky, who scored a point per game in each of his first 19 seasons.

The Penguins captain has been at or above a point per game in every game this season. He narrowly avoided falling behind that mark against the Sharks by scoring a secondary assist on Bryan Rust's empty-net goal and has 65 points in 65 games.

With 17 games remaining this season, the Penguins captain needs to match that in points to keep his chances of catching Gretzky intact.

It's a small consolation for Crosby, who has historically valued team accomplishments over personal. But it's a place in the history books that would illustrate Crosby's consistent greatness throughout his illustrious career.
