One of the greatest goalies in Pittsburgh Penguins history is finally getting his recognition by the Hall of Fame.
The Pittsburgh Penguins were a great team in the early 1990’s, bringing home back-to-back Stanely Cup championships in 1991 and 1992, then following that up with the franchise’s only President’s Trophy.
While those Penguins roster were loaded with Hall of Fame talent, one key piece had long been overlooked for hockey’s most prestigious honor.
Ahead of the announcement of the 2023 Hockey Hall of Fame class, goalie Tom Barrasso finally got his long overdue call.
Even before joining the Penguins during the 1988-89 season, Barrasso was already one of the best young goalies in the league.
At the age of 18 with the Buffalo Sabres, Barrasso kicked his career off with a Calder Trophy for league’s best rookie and a Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goalie.
Four more times over his 19-year career, Barrasso would finish as a finalist for the Vezina with two of those times coming with the Penguins.
Ahead of the official ceremony to induct him and the rest of the 2023 Class into the Hall, Barrasso received his Hall of Fame ring.
Barrasso’s plaque was also unveiled in the Great Hall.
In 777 career games played, Barrasso posted a record of 369-277-86 and was the long-time franchise leader in wins for the Penguins with 226.
Marc-Andre Fleury eventually shattered that record, but for quite a long time, Barrasso could have been considered the greatest goalie in Penguins’ history.
Barrasso’s 43 wins in 1992-93 still stands as the most wins in a single season for a Penguins’ goalie.
