Penguins Trade Blue Jackets for Young Forward
The Pittsburgh Penguins have tipped their toes into the trade market by adding a young forward.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins are in the midst of a contest against the Montreal Canadiens, but that isn’t stopping them from making a move. The Penguins have acquired forward Emil Bemstrom from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In return, the Penguins have sent AHL forward Alex Nylander and a conditional 2026 sixth-round draft pick.
Bemstrom is a 24-year-old forward native of Sweden and has played 204 career games in the NHL. Over five seasons with the Blue Jackets, Bemstrom has scored 31 goals and 38 assists for 69 total points.
In 32 games this season, he has five goals and six assists for 11 total points. Bemstrom has a contract that lasts through the 2023-24 season with an average annual value of $900,000 at the NHL level.
Nylander has been with the Penguins organization for two seasons but has never found regular time in the NHL lineup. Since joining the team before the 2022-23 season, he has played nine games at the NHL level with only two points on his ledger.
Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas recently said he isn't yet committing to buying or selling at the trade deadline. He did, however, state he hopes to make an effort of finding younger players for the Penguins. Bemstrom being 24 fits that category.
