Will the Pittsburgh Penguins be willing to pay Tristan Jarry what his next contract is projected to be?

Will the Pittsburgh Penguins be willing to pay Tristan Jarry what his next contract is projected to be?

While the Pittsburgh Penguins are in the heat of the hiring process for their next general manager, whoever takes on the job will have a difficult task ahead of them.

More than trying to build a contending team right away, the Penguins have a couple of high-profile free agents on their ledger.

Among the upcoming free agents is goalie Tristan Jarry who chose the worst possible time to have an injury riddled year that mirrored his inconsistent playing ability.

Jarry finished the 2022-23 season with 47 games played and a 24-13-7 with a 2.90 goals against average, .909 save percentage, and only a pair of shutouts.

Some people entered the year thinking Jarry could put up a fight in the Vezina conversation, but that never came to fruition.

Regardless of his 2022-23 performance, Jarry is likely going to be one of the top free agent goalies on the market.

What kind of contract does Jarry earn? It seems likely that the disappointing season may have cost him a couple million dollars.

According to projections from Daily Faceoff, Jarry’s next contract will shape out to four years, $4.8 million per season.

For some reference, Jarry’s last contract netted him three years at $3.5 million.

Had Jarry put together a better performance, there’s no doubt that projection would be much higher.

The Penguins have a big decision to make when it comes to their starting goalie position.

Jarry is yet to prove he is good enough to push them to a deep run in the postseason but has shown time and again that he can’t stay healthy.

It might be time for the Penguins to move on from Jarry and utilize the available cap space in a different manner.

Jarry will likely land on his feet through free agency; plenty of teams in the NHL need goaltending and that same list names Jarry as the top ranked free agent goalie.
