Team USA got plenty of help from the Pittsburgh Penguins in their first ever undefeated preliminary round.
Team USA has been a force so far at the 2023 IIHF World Championship, and with plenty of help from multiple Pittsburgh Penguins, they run a perfect 7-0 in the preliminary round.
Capped off with a 4-3 overtime victory over Sweden, the United States were led by Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith and their captain Nick Bonino.
Through the first seven games, DeSmith totaled four wins, including a shutout and was twice chosen as the Player of the Game.
DeSmith finished the preliminary round with a 1.49 goals against average and a .942 save percentage.
Bonino was picked as USA’s captain prior to the start of the tournament, and despite missing a game he finished with three goals and an assist for four points.
Penguins’ forward Drew O’Connor is also representing Team USA and recorded five points (3G-2A) through the opening round of games.
O’Connor scored twice in a 9-0 stomping of France.
With their first ever perfect run in the preliminary round, Team USA took the top spot in Group A.
The tournament’s quarter finals are set to begin on May 25.
