PITTSBURGH – Despite the Pittsburgh Penguins failing to reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs, multiple players are ready to represent their country at the IIHF World Championship. Michael Bunting will suit up for Team Canada, while Marcus Pettersson and Erik Karlsson are lacing up for Team Sweden.

Assistant coach Ty Hennes will be behind Team USA’s bench, while president/GM Kyle Dubas will be in Team Canada’s front office.

Team Finland will also have Penguins representation, as young forwards Valtteri Puustinen and Jesse Puljujarvi have committed to playing in the tournament. Finland announced that those two will join their roster just days before the tournament begins.

This will be Puustinen’s third time representing Finland on the national stage, and he’s walked away with medals in each of his previous two appearances. In 2019, on Finland’s World Junior Championship team, Puustinen played six games en route to a gold medal. During the 2021 IIHF World Championship, Puustinen suited up for a pair of games in Finland’s silver medal run.

In his first extended look at the NHL level, the young Penguins forward played in 52 games, scoring five goals and 15 assists for 20 total points.

Puljujarvi is new to the Penguins organization, signing a two-year deal in early February. In 22 games played, he scored three goals and an assist.

Puljujarvi has represented Finland on multiple occasions since his time as a top prospect. The international stage is where he usually shines his brightest, too. In 27 games as a junior player, he scored 36 points and helped Finland to a gold medal at the 2016 World Junior Championship.

Multiple former Penguins are also featured on Finland’s roster. Defensemen Olli Maatta and Juuso Riikola, forward Mikael Granlund, and former prospect goalie Emil Larmi are all set to represent Finland.

The 2024 IIHF World Championship Tournament is set to kick off on May 10 in Czechia.
