PITTSBURGH – After just three games and a handful of healthy scratches with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Matthew Phillips has been placed on waivers. The Penguins acquired Phillips from the Washington Capitals via the waiver wire in mid-February.

In three games with the Penguins, Phillips didn’t score any points and recorded no shots on goal. He averaged 11:20 of ice time with the Penguins and played between the second and third forward lines.

After his three games in the lineup, Phillips was a healthy scratch for five games, including all four of the Penguins' recent Western Conference road trip.

Phillips is an undersized forward standing at just five-foot-eight. Upon arriving in Pittsburgh, he said he aims to bring speed and mobility to his game.

The next move for Phillips is unclear, as the Penguins are likely getting ready for a teardown with their roster. The trade deadline is days away, and a significant sale is expected in Pittsburgh. If Phillips clears, he may not be sent to the American Hockey League quite yet, with NHL roster spots possibly being available.
