It has been abundantly clear for quite a while now that three Pittsburgh Penguins are very much on the trade market.
And it appears that one team is engaging in discussions.
According to a report by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Los Angeles Kings have been "talking with" the Penguins about a potential trade opportunity.
Although - at this point - it is unclear which player the Kings may be targeting, there's a good chance that it's one of Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell, or Erik Karlsson.
Rust, 33, is coming off a career year, when he registered 31 goals and 65 points in 71 games. The same goes for Rakell, 32, who had career-highs in both goals (35) and points (70).
Karlsson, 35, put up 11 goals and 53 points in addition to a rating of minus-24 in 82 games. Even though Karlsson would be an attractive option on the market for several teams, it is more likely that the Kings are targeting a forward.

It was rumored prior to the trade deadline that the Kings had an offer on the table for Rakell, so it stands to reason that they may be circling back. It has also been reported that several teams have called on Rust, whose consistency in terms of production - and his leadership qualities - would make him a valuable veteran presence for any contending team.
With the salary cap spiking this summer, the Kings have $21.71 million to work with. They are in need of offensive help, so adding Rakell or Rust would help in that department.
And since each of their contracts - with Rakell at $5 million average annual value for three more years and Rust at $5.125 million for three more years - are very cost-effective, it stands to reason that the Penguins would get fair value in return for each.
