For the second time this calendar year, Captain Canada will be donning the maple leaf for his home country.
On Sunday, it was announced that Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will be joining the Canadian Men's National Team at the IIHF World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden. The tournament officially kicks off on May 9, with pre-tournament play already occurring.
Crosby also represented Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-off tournament in February, when - as captain for Team Canada - he registered a goal and five points in four games to tie for second in tournament scoring with fellow Canadian star Connor McDavid and behind only Team USA defenseman Zach Werenski.
'He's A Legend': Sidney Crosby's 4 Nations Performance Inspires Younger Canadian Teammates
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby's performance at the 4 Nations Face-off certainly didn't go unnoticed by teammates.
The last time Crosby represented Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship was in 2015, when he captained Canada to its first World Championship gold since 2007. In that appearance, Team Canada went 10-0, and Crosby registered four goals and 11 points in nine games. In addition, he officially became a member of the Triple Gold Club.
In total, this will be the third time Crosby will represent Canada at the World Championship, with the other being in 2006, when he became the youngest international player ever to win a tournament scoring title.
The addition of Crosby to Team Canada's roster - he is likely to captain the team again as well - will be a welcome one, as many of the NHL's biggest Canadian stars are still participating in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Crosby's record in international play is unmatched, as he is 48-6-1 in his career donning the red and white.
Crosby could be joining Penguins defensive prospect Harrison Brunicke at the tournament, who participated in Sunday's pre-tournament matchup against Austria but has yet to officially be named to Team Canada's roster.
