Brad Marchand only had good things to say about the Pittsburgh Penguins captain and his standing in the NHL.
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins have consistently been some of the best teams in the NHL for the better part of two decades, and much of that is thanks to each side’s star power.
Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang have brought so much success to the Penguins while guys like Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and for a time Zdeno Chara anchored the Bruins.
As the NHL hurdles into 2024, there is a heat between these two black and gold rivals, but also a mutual respect.
That was shown as Marchand spoke highly of Crosby saying he isn’t getting a proper amount of respect.
“I think he’s still obviously one of the best in the world, but he’s not really getting the credit he deserves right now,” Marchand said. “A lot of the attention is on the younger guys, but if you look at the details of the game, and full 200 feet, he’s by far the best player in the League.”
It’s fair to say that a ton of attention is being placed on the young stars of the NHL, but they’re also some of the best players.
Connor Bedard is a rookie sensation set to become the youngest All-Star in modern NHL hisroy; Connor McDavid just recently reached 900 career points in just 602 games.
Crosby is still one of the best in the NHL, but the league continues to get younger around him.
“He’s not as flashy as some of the higher-end guys,” Marchand said. “He’s direct. He plays safe but he plays hard and direct. He plays a winning game.”
Crosby and Marchand recently faced off against each other in a battle that they both scored in crucial situations.
Marchand opened the scoring just seconds into the contest and completed a Bruins’ comeback with a shorthanded goal to tie the score at five.
Later, with the score still tied at five a piece, Crosby scored on the power play to give the Penguins the lead and eventually the win.
The Penguins don’t win in Boston very often racking up only two wins since the 2015-16 season.
Crosby is putting up a real argument to be in the Hart Trophy conversation for the NHL’s MVP and if this trend of solid play can continue, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be in consideration.
