The Pittsburgh Penguins' latest loss was another example of the team wasting Sidney Crosby's stellar season.
PITTSBURGH -- Blowing a four-goal lead is usually unexpected, but the Pittsburgh Penguins have perfected the art of losing winnable games this season. So it wasn't a shock when they surrendered five straight goals against the Colorado Avalanche, and it wasn't shocking when they lost in overtime, either.
It was shocking, however, that Sidney Crosby's four-point outing wasn't enough to single-handedly guide Pittsburgh to victory.
The offensive explosion was massive for Crosby, as he's been a shell of himself since the Jake Guentzel trade. He’s been noticeably dejected recently, and it was unclear if he would snap out of his funk before the regular season concluded.
Fortunately for Crosby, he broke out of that slump in a huge way and is quickly back on track with another sensational season. In a very Crosby-like manner, he made more history doing so.
As part of his 4-point campaign, Crosby became the first active NHL player with 14 seasons of 70 or more points. He wasn't done there, either, as he recorded a vintage redirection goal—his 34th of the season and 584th of his career—which propelled him past The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, on the list for most goals scored with one organization.
And while Crosby remains one of the best hockey players in the league, the Penguins are crumbing. At the beginning of the month, they were five points out of a playoff spot with hopes they could go on a run. As the month enters the final week, the difference has doubled.
Their goaltending has fallen apart in the month of March as well. Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic have struggled, so neither one feels like the go-to goalie for the remaining games. Their secondary scoring remains nonexistent, their coaching is lackluster, and they are missing accountability.
The Penguins aren't officially eliminated from the playoff picture despite losses piling up. The writing is on the wall for this season, and everyone but the Penguins locker room is willing to admit it. While Crosby does everything he possibly can to will his team to the postseason, he unfortunately cannot do it single-handed.
