The Pittsburgh Penguins have gotten off to a tough start, but stand above the rest analytically.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have gotten off to a tough start, but stand above the rest analytically.

Through 10 games of the 2023-24 NHL season, the Pittsburgh Penguins are not at all proud of where they sit in the standings.

A slow start has forced the Penguins to the bottom of the Metropolitan Division with a 4-6-0 record.

Despite the slow start, everyone around the team has believed that they’ve played far better than the record suggests.

The Penguins believe they have been the better team for a good chunk of the season, they just haven’t been able to finish.

While some might not like to hear the Penguins have played better than their results, the analytical numbers fall in the team’s favor.

As a matter of fact, according to moneypuck.com, at 5-on-5, the Penguins lead the league in expected goals percentage with a whopping 59.12%.

That number puts them above the second place team at 5-on-5, the Colorado Avalanche who boast a 57.67%.

Even in all situations, the Penguins are still right near the top; the Avalanche lead in expected goals in all situations with a 57.92%, but the Penguins are right on their heels with a 57.55%.

The Penguins skaters have felt good this season, and certain numbers can back up their claim.

If they are able to finish on a more consistent basis, they can easily climb the mountain they have ahead of them to get back into the playoff hunt.

MoneyPuck also gives the Penguins good chances at the postseason with a 60.9% chance; well above the Toronto Maple Leafs who have floundered to a 53.3% chance.

A lopsided 10-2 win over the San Jose Sharks should build momentum and personal confidence in the Penguins favor.
