The loss of former Pittsburgh Penguins player Adam Johnson is being felt beyond the realm of hockey.
It’s been a week since the hockey world learned of the death of former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson who died following a freak accident mid-game.
The former Penguins player was playing in a game with the Nottingham Panthers of the EIHL in the United Kingdom when he took a skate blade to the neck.
While hockey leagues around the world are taking a hard look at extra protection, teams continue to take the time to honor the life of Johnson.
Rather than a moment of silence, the Penguins themselves held a moment of applause for their former prospect.
The tragedy of Johnson’s loss has hit more than just the sport of hockey as a British Premiere League soccer game was paused for a moment of remembrance.
In a match between Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa was paused during the 47th minute and the crowd, players, and coaches joined together in applause.
47 is the number Johnson wore with most of the teams he played for, including the Penguins and Panthers.
Just before the long ovations began for Johnson, the Forest scored early in the 47th minute to give them a 2-0 advantage.
Just a perfectly timed goal to give the moment so much more weight.
The Forest went on to win 2-0 and end a seven-game losing streak.
