It's becoming abundantly clear that former Pittsburgh Penguins' coaches are in high demand this offseason.
On Monday, ex-assistant coach Mike Vellucci was scooped up by the Chicago Blackhawks to join their staff in the same role he held with the Penguins in leading the penalty kill and forward units. Prior to that - on May 2 - former Penguins' bench boss Mike Sullivan took the main job with the New York Rangers to become the 38th coach in their history.
And, now, two more former assistant coaches are - reportedly - also moving on.
On Tuesday, it was reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet that David Quinn and Ty Hennes - both assistant coaches for the Penguins under Sullivan - are once again joining Sullivan's staff in New York as assistant coaches in the same capacity they held with the Penguins. Joe Sacco, who was interim coach of the Boston Bruins in 2024-25 after the firing of former coach Jim Montgomery, is also set to join Quinn and Hennes on Sullivan's staff.
Official confirmation has yet to be announced by the Rangers.
Quinn, 58, joined the Penguins prior to the 2024-25 season to coach the defense and power play units. Under Quinn, the Penguins' power play finished sixth in the league in conversion percentage (25.8 percent), which was more than a 10-point increase from their 2023-24 finish at 30th (15.3 percent). He was also the head coach of the Rangers from 2018-21, so he is set to make his return to the organization.
He was the only assistant coach who wasn't officially let go by Penguins' GM and POHO Kyle Dubas upon Sullivan's departure from the organization.
Hennes, 45, was with Pittsburgh under Sullivan since 2018. He began as a skating and skills coach for his first four seasons with the Penguins and was promoted to an assistant during the 2022-23 season.
