The Pittsburgh Penguins are trying to hire more than just a general manager and a former coach could find a new position.
The search for a new front office staff has spread far and wide for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and people forget that Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is trying to fill more than just a general manager and/or president of hockey operations positions.
With around 20 names listed as being interviewed by the Penguins, a new name has emerged but not in the running for GM or president.
According to the Athletic, former Penguins head coach Eddie Olczyk has been involved in interviews for a separate position entirely.
Olczyk is among candidates to serve as a conduit between ownership and the hockey operations staff.
This position would likely help keep a cleaner stream of communication between FSG and whoever they decide to hire in the various front office positions still to be filled.
Olczyk has a long history in the NHL; the Chicago native played over 1,000 games, including parts of two seasons with the Penguins.
After retiring from playing, Olczyk became a broadcaster for the Penguins and was soon hired as the head coach in 2003.
Olczyk remained as the head coach for a couple of seasons and was Sidney Crosby’s first NHL bench boss.
Before Olczyk could finish his second season, the Penguins relieved him of his duties.
Olczyk returned to the broadcast booth where he has been for almost 20 years with various teams and stations.
