The Pittsburgh Penguins will one day retire Jaromir Jagr's number, did this visit put the plans in motion?

The Pittsburgh Penguins will one day retire Jaromir Jagr's number, did this visit put the plans in motion?

One of the greatest players to ever lace a pair of skates, let alone dawn a jersey with a Pittsburgh Penguins logo, was in town this weekend and paid a visit to PPG Paints Arena.

Thanks to being part of an autograph session in Pittsburgh, Penguins legend Jaromir Jagr was in town and was invited to look around a building he hasn’t seen since the final years of his playing days.

Jagr hasn’t played in the NHL since the 2017-18 season, but he still plays professionally in his native Czechia with the team he owns, the Kladno Knights.

At the age of 51, Jagr still doesn’t have plans to retire, but when he does, the Penguins have a plan of their own.

Once Jagr decides to retire from professional hockey, the Penguins want to retire his iconic No. 68.

It’s an honor that not many in Penguins’ history have received before; Mario Lemieux’s No. 66 and Michel Briere’s No. 21 are the only two numbers retired by the team.

Part of Jagr’s tour of the arena and locker ream featured the gift of a personalized reverse retro jersey, which could be a nod of the team’s future plans.

Jagr himself devised a plan for how he would want his number to be retired by the team and it would include the Penguins traveling to Czechia as part of the NHL’s Global Series.

The idea is that the Penguins would play in Czechia with Jagr on hand to announce his official retirement from the sport of hockey.

Following the series, Jagr would follow the Penguins back to Pittsburgh for a proper jersey retirement ceremony.

It’s pretty well known that the Penguins want to and plan on retiring Jagr’s number, it’s just up to him to decide when.
