Adding Erik Karlsson wasn't going to be easy, but it ended up being the biggest trade in Pittsburgh Penguins' history.

Adding Erik Karlsson wasn't going to be easy, but it ended up being the biggest trade in Pittsburgh Penguins' history.

Ever since their inception in 1967, the Pittsburgh Penguins have been involved in a number massive or memorable trades.

Some that come to mind right away are when the Penguins had no choice but to deal away Jaromir Jagr, or one of the worst trades in NHL history when they sent Markus Naslund to the Vancouver Canucks.

The organizations most recent move to acquire future Hall of Famer Erik Karlsson has the potential to be just as memorable, but it’s already a record setting deal.

According to historian Bob Grove, the deal for the Penguins to acquire Karlsson used 12 assets between themselves, the San Jose Sharks, and Montreal Canadiens.

12 pieces makes it the largest trade in Penguins’ franchise history, surpassing the previous record holder of nine when they acquired Phil Kessel in 2015.

Karlsson is the headline grabber in the package, but the Penguins also acquired Rem Pitlick, Dillon Hamaliuk, and a 2026 third-round pick.

The Penguins parted ways with Jan Rutta, Mikael Granlund, and a 2024 first-round pick, who all went to San Jose, while they also nabbed Mike Hoffman from the Canadiens.

Heading to Montreal is a 2025 second round pick from the Penguins, Jeff Petry, Casey DeSmith, and prospect Nathan Legare.

Through the deal, the Penguins managed to subtract about $3 million in salary while still paying $10 million of Karlsson’s average annual value.

It was a big, but tidy piece of business from Kyle Dubas, who has officially left his first big stamp on the Penguins just a few months into his tenure.
