It's not the most ideal record to hold, but Evgeni Malkin has made Pittsburgh Penguins history.
PITTSBURGH - Evgeni Malkin is usually known as one of the greatest players to ever play the game of hockey, one of the best Pittsburgh Penguins of all time.
Over the years, Malkin has helped the Penguins to 16 straight postseason appearances and three Stanley Cup titles thanks to his offensive ability.
One thing that is often forgotten about Malkin’s game, however, is his tendencies to take penalties.
Malkin’s tendencies for sitting in the sin bin has earned him the honor of accumulating the most penalty minutes in franchise history.
With a call for interference in the first period against the New York Islanders, Malkin reached 1,050 PIMs, surpassing Keven Stevens who for the most in Penguins history.
The Islanders did, however, score on the ensuing power play.
In 522 games with the Penguins, Stevens reached 1,048 penalty minutes, usually playing alongside Mario Lemieux.
Malkin reached this milestone in just over twice the number of games played; this is Malkin’s 1,045th career game.
Normally when a player sets this kind of record they are looked often get looked at as either a fighter or liability.
While Malkin won’t back down from a fight, he isn’t known as that kind of player.
Malkin can be one of the most electric offensive forwards in NHL history; as he’s grown older he doesn’t have the same speed, but he still possesses a great scoring touch.
It’s not the ideal record to hold, but it’s just another way that Malkin will be remembered as one of the greatest Penguins of all time.
