Fans will continue to wait as the Pittsburgh Penguins look for a new general manager.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are approaching a month without a general manager in charge, but that might be for the best.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG) stated that they want to find a new front office staff for the Penguins quickly, but without sacrificing quality.
As the league prepares for the 2023 Draft Lottery, where does FSG stand in their search for a general manager?
For starters, it’s not exactly clear how many people FSG is looking to hire; when Ron Hextall was fired as general manager, president of hockey operations Brian Burke and assistant general manager Chris Pryor were let go, as well.
Is FSG trying to fill each of those roles with three separate people? Is there going to be one face taking up all of the responsibilities? Or is it somewhere in between?
It’s impossible to tell at the moment, but it seems like they are taking their time in the search.
According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Penguins are still in their initial phases of searching for names.
Friedman noted that it’s not yet clear what the structure of the Penguins front office will look like and they might have their eye on Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas.
It doesn’t seem like the Penguins and FSG are close to making a decision, and part of that might be because they are looking at teams still in the postseason.
Friedman did say that former Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman could be contacted by the Penguins, but the NHL would have to approve of such a move.
The waiting game will continue for Penguins fans, but as teams continue to drop out of Stanley Cup running, the closer a hire is made.
