The players sent off by the Pittsburgh Penguins to acquire Erik Karlsson could be on the move soon.
When the Pittsburgh Penguins were in talks to acquire future Hall of Fame defenseman Erik Karlsson, the most obvious piece to be on the move was Jeff Petry.
It wasn’t until the last moment that the Montreal Canadiens entered the deal between the Penguins and San Jose Sharks, and agree to take Petry in the the three-team deal.
One small thing to note, however, is that the Canadiens may already be looking to flip Petry to another team.
Brought up by Eric Engels when the trade took place, the Canadiens may be looking to deal Petry in the near future.
If not before the start of the 2023-24 season, most likely before the trade deadline, and they wouldn’t be afraid to retain a full 50% of his remaining contract.
The Penguins have already stepped up to retain $1,562,500 of Petry’s average annual value for the next two seasons.
Before arriving in Pittsburgh, Petry had requested a trade out of Montreal and the Canadiens obliged; sure, there’s a long a semi-successful history between Petry and the Canadiens, but it likely wont continue.
Thanks to a 15-team no trade list, it’s possible Petry blocked a move to the Sharks in hopes to stay closer to his family based in Michigan.
While Petry went to Montreal in the Karlsson deal, it’s possible he’s on the move again before the puck drops on the 2023-24 season.
Same goes with Casey DeSmith who also went to Montreal in the Karlsson deal; he might be on the move, as well.
