Moves will be made this summer, but will the Pittsburgh Penguins deal the right players?

The Pittsburgh Penguins are a month removed from playing hockey, and as more teams join them in the offseason, the closer everyone gets to seeing massive changes.

Once a new general manager is hired for the Penguins’ front office, he or she will have to quickly go to work on adjusting the roster to build a successful team.

As the NHL nears their Conference Finals, the Athletic released their first offseason trade board.

While Jake Guentzel wasn’t on their top 30 list, he was mentioned as a possibility if he doesn’t sign an extension this summer.

The Athletic’s list did, however, feature two Penguins that a number of fans have already said they want to see dealt; Jeff Petry and Mikael Granlund.

Both Petry and Granlund failed to live up to their expectations and are taking up a large chunk of the Penguins’ salary cap space.

Petry might still have some use in the lineup, but not with his pricetag; two more seasons at $6.25 each year.

Granlund also has two years left at $5 million per; the Penguins ideally need to do whatever it takes to offload one if not both of these players.

Petry appeared in 61 games this past season and recorded five goals and 26 assists for 31 points.

Mike Matheson, the defender Petry was traded for, played in only 48 games yet still out-produced with 34 points (8G-26A).

There wasn’t much good that came out of Granlund’s 21 games with the Penguins; one garbage time goal and three assists.

You may have to strap the first round pick to Granlund, but a new face in the front office will have to do whatever it takes to make a deal.

The Granlund deal may have been the final straw for Ron Hextall in Pittsburgh, and it’ll be up to someone else to right this massive wrong.
