Team USA has gotten great help from their Pittsburgh Penguins representatives at the 2023 World Championship.
Team USA has played two games at the 2023 IIHF World Championship and both have seen spectacular performances from Pittsburgh Penguins representatives.
Penguins’ goalie Casey DeSmith backstopped Team USA to their first win, and was rewarded with Player of the Game.
Nick Bonino was given the same honor for a two-goal performance in a 7-1 thumping of Team Hungary.
In both games, Team USA surrendered the opening tally, but that was all they would allow.
Hungary scored first but the United States answered back with a pair before the end of the period, including Bonino’s first.
Bonino’s tally proved to be the eventual game-winning goal, much like Drew O’Connor had in the first contest.
More than just a veteran on the international squad, Bonino is serving as Team USA captain; he recorded his second goal with a man advantage early into the second period.
Three goals from Team USA in the third sealed the 7-1 win and Bonino was rewarded as Player of the Game.
The second straight Penguins player to be named Player of the Game for Team USA as they start their preliminary round a perfect 2-0.
