Kyle Dubas Says He Will Handle GM Duties for Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins will roll with Kyle Dubas serving as president and general manager for the time being.

Pittsburgh Penguins new President of Hockey Ops Kyle Dubas on he views the team's championship window.

The moment the Pittsburgh Penguins announced they hired Kyle Dubas as president of hockey operations, the first questions flew about who could be the next general manager.

The Penguins went through an extensive process in looking for a replacement for Ron Hextall as general manager, but Dubas says there is no rush to fill that role.

According to Dubas, he will handle the GM duties on an interim basis for the time being and will begin to look at candidates at a later date.

Dubas spent five years as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs so he shouldn’t have any issues taking over the role, even temporarily, with the Penguins.

When/if the search for a general manager does begin, however, Dubas says he will look for a someone who is ‘progressive’ and might feature a skillset he doesn’t have.

Lists of possible GMs have already been tossed around as the Penguins and Dubas begin their tenure together.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff thinks Cam Lawrence could be a good option; Lawrence lives in Pittsburgh and is an analytic consultant with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Penguins want to head in a more analytically driven direction, and Lawrence is someone who could fit that bill.

There has also been speculation that former player and Dubas' assistant with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jason Spezza will follow him to Pittsburgh.

Dubas and the Penguins will get to work right away on building a competitive team, but part of the planning won’t yet feature searching for a general manager.
