The Pittsburgh Penguins haven't gotten the best out of Tristan Jarry, but he's still getting starts in net.
PITTSBURGH - Tristan Jarry has started in 11 games since returning from injury, and has been utilized as the Pittsburgh Penguins’ starting goalie.
Normally, there’s nothing strange about Jarry making that many starts, but he’s been subpar for the Penguins and has been pulled four times in those 11 starts.
Despite a .863 save percentage since returning, head coach Mike Sullivan stated that Jarry will once again start in goal.
Not too long ago, Sullivan stated that Jarry is back to full health, it’s just a matter of getting him back up to speed.
Sullivan believes that Jarry is a lot closer to full speed than his recent stats have shown.
“At the end of the day, Jars is a real good goalie,” Sullivan said. “We know what he’s capable of, and I think he’s a lot closer than what the numbers look like.”
And those numbers haven’t been anywhere near where they should be; Jarry is 4-4-1 since his return and has given up three of more goals eight times.
In the same time frame, Casey DeSmith has been out performing Jarry with a .922 save percentage in seven games played.
While DeSmith is becoming a more reliable option between the pipes, the Sullivan and the Penguins still have faith in Jarry.
“We feel as though he’s a guy we’re going to need here down the stretch,” Sullivan said. “Case is a solid goalie as well and has given us good minutes. We believe we have two capable guys, but we believe Jars is a guy that is important to us.”
The Penguins are still barely clinging onto a spot in the Eastern Conference wild card, if they want to reach the postseason, they’ll need Jarry to flip the switch.
Jarry is going to be a huge piece of the Penguins moving forward, especially with the number of injuries that have hit the blue line.
However good or bad Jarry performs over these last three weeks is likely going to mirror the success of the Penguins as a whole.
