A number of big names on the Pittsburgh Penguins have a chance to further their legacy this season.

A number of big names on the Pittsburgh Penguins have a chance to further their legacy this season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins celebrated multiple huge achievements during the 2022-23 season with two members of the veteran core reaching 1,000 games played.

Along the way, other Penguins skaters and coaches reached milestones of their own, and this upcoming season could see even more achievements.

With training camps nearing in, let’s see what milestones can be reached this season by some of the biggest names in black and gold.

    Evgeni Malkin 500 goals/1,300 points

After celebrating 1,000 games played last season, Evgeni Malkin has a chance to make it two straight years with big statistical accomplishments.

If Malkin is able to remain healthy and can put up similar numbers to 2022-23, he should have no problem reaching 500 career goals and 1,300 points.

At this moment, Malkin sits with 471 career goals, just 29 shy; last year, in all 82 games played, Geno recorded 27.

It’s not an easy one to reach this season as Malkin’s scoring ability seems to be taking a minor dip over the last few seasons, but he may have one more 30-goal campaign in him.

Malkin also currently has 1,229 points to his name and it’s pretty appropriate he is only 71 points shy of 1,300.

Last year, Malkin posted a total of 83 points, giving him a great chance to eclipse 1,300 with ease this season.

    Kris Letang 700 points

Kris Letang is already the greatest defenseman in Penguins’ history, but he has a chance to further his legacy being within striking distance of 700 career points.

Hitting the 700-point marker shouldn’t be difficult for Letang either as he will enter the 2023-24 season with 691 in his career.

Even with enormous road blocks in his way during the 2022-23 season, Letang still appeared in 64 games and recorded 41 points.

Letang might take a backseat this season as the Penguins leading defensive scorer, but even the man stepping in is chasing down a milestone of his own.

    Erik Karlsson 800 points

One of the newest and most well known members of the Penguins’ organization has a real chance at furthering his own legacy in hockey.

Erik Karlsson joins the Penguins with 761 career points, just 39 shy of 800; hitting this milestone would help continue solidify his spot in the Hall of Fame.

Already the 21st highest scoring defender in NHL history, if Karlsson is able to pot 39 points this season he will become just the 18th blue liner to ever reach 800.

It’ll be just about impossible for Karlsson to match his 101 points from the 2022-23 season, but he should have no problem notching at least 40 in his first season with the Penguins.

Realistically, Karlsson could work his way to 70, maybe 80 points during 2023-24.

Karlsson is also closing in on 1,000 career games played.

    Reilly Smith 500 points

One of the most consistent point scorers as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights, Reilly Smith joins the Penguins organization with a great chance to eclipsing 500 points.

In 764 career games played, Smith sits at 473 career points, just 27 back of the 500 marker.

Smith has never played a full season in the NHL and recorded below 37 points, making this another easy hurdle.

Playing on the second line along with Malkin, Smith should have ample opportunity to exceen the 500-point mark in just a few months.

Smith’s career-high in points came during the Golden Knights’ inaugural season when he recorded 60 (22G-38A) in 67 games played.

There should be no shortage of things to watch for all season long as the Penguins not only look to bounce back into the postseason, but their stars look to cement their legacies.
