The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without a returning fan favorite on a week-to-week basis.
PITTSBURGH - Ahead of their contest against the Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan announced that Nick Bonino would be out week-to-week with a lacerated kidney.
Sullivan stated that Bonino suffered an injury during the Penguins loss to the New York Islanders and the pain wouldn’t go away.
Bonino was sent to the hospital as a precaution to get checked up and that’s when the laceration was discovered.
A procedure was done and luckily for Bonino, he is only out on a week-to-week basis.
It hurts to lose a player like Bonino just a week after requiring him at the trade deadline.
“He’s a great guy, a real good player,” Sullivan said. “We were excited to get him involved for so many reasons. He’s a great voice in the locker room.”
Bonino was an integral part of the Penguins’ back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017 and bringing him back to Pittsburgh meant another veteran presence in the room.
“He’ll continue to be that for us,” Sullivan said. “I do think the prognosis is somewhat encouraging.”
The Penguins recently recalled Alex Nylander on an emergency basis and is likely back in the lineup with Bonino out on a weekly basis.
Bonino has played three games back with the Penguins since the trade deadline and has not recorded a point.
