Penguins Have Expressed Interest in Goalie Kaapo Kahkonen

The Pittsburgh Penguins are among teams showing an interest in Kaapo Kahkonen from the San Jose Sharks.

Should the Pittsburgh Penguins be "all in" on a championship run in the 2023-24 season?

Time is running thin for the Pittsburgh Penguins to come up with a solution for their goaltending, and Kyle Dubas might have his eyes on a new horse in the race.

According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the Penguins are not only looking for takers on Jeff Petry, but they might have an interest in San Jose Sharks goalie Kaapo Kahkonen.

As part of that report, the Sharks may have kicked the tires on Petry, lining up a possible deal that could take place during or around the upcoming draft.

Kahkonen had a disappointing 2022-23 season, but the Sharks weren’t a very good team in front of him.

In 37 appearances, Kahkonen finished the year with a 9-20-7 record, .883 save percentage, and 3.85 goals against average.

Those numbers are far from stellar, but the Sharks finished with a record of 22-44-16, only two standings points ahead of the Anaheim Ducks who finished as the worst team in 2022-23.

Kahkonen started his career with a much different outlook, however, as the Minnesota Wild saw the rookie goalie put together a 19-9-1 record through his first 29 games.

With a year left on his contract at $2.75 million, Kahkonen needs a new home where he can prove he still has what it takes to be an NHL starter.

This is the exact kind of goalie Dubas would look for, as well; a younger netminder who doesn’t immediately strike anyone as an all-star, but could benefit from a change of scenery.
