The Pittsburgh Penguins need to bolster depth and Max Comtois needs a positive change of scenery.
While there is a lot of focus on the 2023 NHL Draft, the opening of free agency is right around the corner and the Pittsburgh Penguins have a chance to make some real noise.
President of hockey operations Kyle Dubas said that he doesn’t plan on making big splash moves with the Penguins, but he does want to rebuild the depth of the team.
Across the country, the Anaheim Ducks have decided they will not send a qualifying offer to forward Max Comtois.
Once a top prospect in the Ducks system, Comtois had a couple of disappointing seasons offensively, posting 16 point in 2021-22 then 19 in 2022-23.
While struggling to reach expectations, the Ducks weren’t providing Comtois with much help as they combined for only 54 wins over the last two seasons.
Comtois’ qualifying offer would have been an affordable $2.445 million and he is the exact type of player Dubas needs to add to the Penguins’ depth.
Taking a lunge at Comtois would give the Penguins a cheap bottom-six options who has a ton to prove in a new environment.
During his time in the QMJHL, Comtois was a regular producer; even during his 2019-20 stint in the AHL, he scored 24 points in 31 games.
Comtois is a depth option who won’t put up outrageous numbers, but might be able to unlock his full potential with the Penguins.
